Stretching and Flexibility

Exercise Example Videos

Flexibility and mobility are gaining more traction in the fitness world and for good reason. As we age or do certain activities for work or sports, we develop imbalances in our muscle lengths or severe inflexibilities by becoming extremely good at certain repetitive  movements. I consider myself lucky in a few ways due to having developed and maintained mobility and flexibility with gymnastics and martial arts in my youth and teenage years when the body is growing so maintaining it is a lot easier. I defiantly do have my weaknesses and the process is the same for me as it is for everyone else: repetition and consistency.

Just like bodybuilding or developing a new skill, flexibility and mobility takes time and consistent effort to make progress. Body building at the gym is a good example to compare how to get more flexible. If one was to go to the gym 6 days a week, working on different movements and body parts in a "split" or working on the whole body 2-3x a week giving the body enough time to rest in between, whist pushing close to the limit each session, the muscles will respond to the stimulus and grow bigger and stronger.

Flexibility and mobility training is the same, regularly stretching close to your safe limits will cause a stimulus for your muscles to grow longer. If you are sore from stretching, gentle stretching on those days is ok, but overstretching may cause the muscle to strain or ligament and tendons to sprain so a balance must found for each muscle being stretched and how often and how hard.

Below are example of how to stretch each area of the body or stretching routines to gain or maintain flexibility and mobility.
